by COLlive Editor · COLliveOn a sunny Sunday morning in June, the Friendship Circle of Brooklyn hosted an intimate Founders and Friends Appreciation Brunch at its new Center.
The gathering was dedicated to the individuals and families whose partnership helped make the purchase and renovation of the Center possible. It was an opportunity to express gratitude to those who recognized the potential of the project from its earliest stages.
Today, the impact of the Center can be seen everywhere. Throughout the week, the building is filled with programs, volunteers, families, and community members. It has become a vibrant hub of activity and connection, making it difficult to imagine the organization without it.
Back then, there was no way to fully appreciate what this Center would mean to the community.
Like many community projects, it started with a vision and a belief that creating a permanent home would allow the organization and its programs to grow in ways that simply weren’t possible before.
One story shared during the program captured that evolution. Fourteen years ago, at one of Friendship Circle’s earliest donor meetings, a potential supporter questioned the need for special children to have programming altogether. Today, the conversation is very different.
A highlight of the brunch was hearing from several founders and supporters who shared the stories behind their involvement. They reflected on how they first became connected to Friendship Circle, the difference they have seen it make in the lives of individuals and families, and why they chose to invest their time, resources, and support in helping the organization grow.
Before purchasing the property, a friend offered a simple piece of advice: “Build and they will come.” While the leadership appreciated the optimism, they believed they had a realistic understanding of what growth would look like.
The Center quickly proved otherwise.
The first High Holiday services brought crowds beyond expectations, requiring walls to be opened to accommodate additional seating. More recently, Shavuos services drew a standing-room-only crowd. Just a few months ago, nine new families reached out within a two-week period seeking to join the Friendship Circle community.
These moments represent far more than growth in numbers. They reflect what happens when a community is given a place to gather, connect, and belong.
For the first time in the organization’s history, all Friendship Circle offices, staff, volunteers, and programs operate under one roof. The result has been transformative. Programs that were once constrained by space have expanded dramatically. Families now have greater access to services, activities, and opportunities for engagement. Multiple programs can run simultaneously, creating a level of energy and collaboration that was previously impossible.
One particularly meaningful moment came when three programs were taking place at the same time: a mothers’ support group, an adult learning program, and a volunteer meeting. It was a simple scene, but one that demonstrated just how much the Center had changed the organization’s ability to serve the community.
The Center has become more than a venue for programs. Its vast outdoor space is filled with children enjoying tricycles, bubbles, and chalk on sunny afternoons. Families gather on holidays and snow days, volunteers meet regularly, and friendships continue to develop throughout the building. In countless small but meaningful ways, the Center has become a true home for community life.
Throughout the morning, speakers returned to a common theme: growth creates growth. As opportunities expand, more individuals and families become engaged, strengthening the community and creating even greater demand for programs and services.
The brunch concluded with heartfelt appreciation for the founders, friends, and supporters who helped make the Center a reality. Special recognition was given to those who partnered in the purchase and renovation of the property and helped transform a vision into a thriving center of community life.
Guests were invited to walk through the building, visit the spaces dedicated by generous families, and see firsthand the life, friendship, and joy that now fill its halls.
What began as an ambitious vision has become a vibrant home for connection, belonging, and growth. The Founders and Friends Appreciation Brunch served as a meaningful reminder that behind every thriving community stands a group of people who believed in its future and helped make it possible.
