KUCHING (Oct 31): Regulations on carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) at both Sarawak and federal levels will be harmonised for smooth implementation, said the Premier.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pointed out the new CCUS Bill will be introduced in Parliament soon.

“What we need is to harmonise this new federal law to accommodate federal interests,” he told reporters at the Deepavali open house of Sarawak Sikh Temple Association president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira here today.

He explained that federal oversight is necessary for cross-border carbon transportation into Sarawak, as the federal government is a signatory to the London Protocol.

“However, once the carbon enters Sarawak, it falls under our jurisdiction, and when it is stored within our land, it must comply with our state laws.

“So, we will harmonise both regulations to ensure smooth implementation,” he said.

He added Sarawak is expected to begin carbon trading after Parliament passes the CCUS Bill.

“Insyallah, after the passing of the Bill in Parliament this December, then execution,” he said.

Yesterday, Economy Ministry Rafizi Ramli said the ministry is keen to engage with the Sarawak government on CCUS development initiatives.

He said Sarawak is among four states identified with significant potential to serve as CCUS hubs in the next five years, alongside Sabah, Terengganu, and Pahang.

Highlighting Sarawak’s advantage in positioning itself as a prominent player, Rafizi noted the economic and environmental potential of successful CCUS projects.
