KAPIT (March 19): Police are stepping up efforts to promote road safety awareness ahead of the festive season through advocacy and engagement programmes under Op Selamat 26.

Kapit police chief DSP Rohana Nanu said the initiative aims to instil safe driving habits among road users as traffic volume is expected to increase in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

“The programme focuses on educating the public on the importance of complying with traffic laws and adopting responsible attitudes on the road to reduce accidents, especially during the festive season,” she said in a statement posted on Facebook.

She added that continuous advocacy efforts are crucial to ensure motorists prioritise safety when travelling back to their hometowns.

The advocacy programme and road safety campaign were held at Kapit Town Square on Friday, and officiated by Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak Kubong.

Among those present were Kapit Resident Elvis Didit, Kapit District Officer Thomas Kendawang Geoffery, and Bukit Mabong District Office representative Tracy Nyipa.

The programme also saw participation from various agencies including the Road Transport Department, Fire and Rescue Department, and Civil Defence Force, reflecting a collaborative approach in strengthening road safety advocacy.

Activities during the programme included road safety talks, distribution of safety pamphlets and bubur lambuk in conjunction with the Ramadan month, as well as engagement sessions with the local community.

The initiative underscores the IPD Kapit continued commitment to enhancing preventive measures through education and public outreach under Op Selamat 26, aimed at ensuring a safe and smooth journey for all road users during the festive period.
