MIRI (Oct 6): The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade has successfully developed two GPS tracking devices meant to expedite search and rescue (SAR) operations, especially in the jungle or forested areas with limited or no internet coverage.

Sarawak GOF Brigade commander, SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang, said the tracking devices called ‘Ongrid’ and ‘Offgrid’ were invented by the team’s Innovative and Creative Group (KIK), and were tested during a SAR exercise conducted here at the 12th Battalion Miri, which began on Sept 22.

“The models were utilised during the SAR exercise, and the trial run was a success. This is the first time we have used these devices.

“We look forward to expanding the use of these devices, and we are set to propose them to Bukit Aman,” he said in his speech when officiating at the closing ceremony of the SAR exercise here yesterday.

Earlier in his speech, he highlighted that the devices could monitor the movement and track the location of SAR personnel in real time, significantly reducing the risk of getting lost in dense jungles.

“This allows the operations commander to coordinate movements, manage tasks, and expedite response and rescue efforts in an efficient manner.

“In terms of safety, real-time detection ensures that medical assistance can be dispatched immediately in cases of emergency or injury,” he added, noting that ‘Offgrid’ is essential for tracking in areas with no internet connectivity.

Che Ghazali also said the Sarawak Brigade is seeking potential partners to further develop the devices.

“Technology is advancing rapidly and we need to keep up with its pace with these developments. Conventional or manual SAR methods delay response times,” he added.

Meanwhile, the two-week SAR exercise, which ended yesterday, involved 74 personnel from GOF Sarawak Bridge and Sabah Brigade.

The exercise covered various SAR techniques including rappelling, fast-roping, navigating, compass and GPS reading, and river-crossing methods.

Among those present during the closing ceremony were Sabah GOF deputy commander Ahmad Radzi Hussain; The Police Air Wing Unit (PGU) Sarawak base commander ACP Alias Abdul Wahab; and the 20th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Izwan Ramli.
