Celebrate Christmas with love, hope and togetherness, says Bawang Assan rep
by Philip Wong · Borneo Post OnlineSIBU (Dec 19): Christmas is a time of reflection, love, hope and togetherness with family, friends and community, said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
Speaking at the Sibu Melanau Association pre-Christmas gathering and New Year celebration here recently, he said the festival celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, symbolising the arrival of light into the world.
“We celebrate Christmas not only to remember this significant event but also to embrace its timeless values — peace, generosity, and harmony. It encourages us to look beyond ourselves, care for others, and strengthen the ties that bind our families and communities.
“In doing so, we create a spirit of unity and joy that lasts far beyond the festive season,” he said.
Wong encouraged the community to celebrate Melanau heritage, which enriches Sarawak’s cultural tapestry, and to uphold traditions that strengthen the community.
He also highlighted the New Year as a time to look forward with hope and optimism.
“May we learn from the lessons of the past year, treasure our relationships, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Every effort, big or small, helps ensure our culture and identity remain vibrant for generations to come.
“Let us celebrate together, cherish the moments we share, and look forward to a bright and promising year ahead,” he said.
