MIRI (Oct 23): Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia)’s Department of Built Environment recently carried out a 3D Animation Video Competition, meant to sharpen students’ digital skills while tackling real-world construction challenges, placing them at the forefront of technological advancement in the industry.

The competition required participants to visualise sustainability in construction by creating a 3D model of Miri’s innovative Green Wall project, a conceptual urban installation aimed at promoting eco-friendly practices.

They had to incorporate sustainability elements in their designs and produce an engaging video presentation of their final models.

Chong Yuan emerged as the top winner with his design of the ‘Ecobrick Green Wall of Miri’, winning a RM2,000 cash voucher, a digital badge, and a certificate of excellence.

Separately, the department also held the ‘Curtin Malaysia Building Information Modelling (BIM) Competition’, which was won by a team consisting of Allan Kong Giraw, Nevina Tham Li Phing, Johnaton Chan and Teo Eu Gin, who received medals, cash vouchers, and certificates of participation.

The competition encouraged the use of BIM technology, which has now gained traction on how it transforms planning and execution of construction projects.

Participants were tasked to create a 3D model of a two-storey residential house using BIM-related software like ‘Revit’ and ‘Navisworks’, as well as challenged to improve the model by identifying potential design clashes and producing a comprehensive bill of quantities.

“Both competitions meant to empower students to lead in areas such as sustainability, BIM technology and 3D modelling, ensuring that they are well-prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow’s construction industry,” said Curtin Malaysia in a statement.
