SIBU (Jan 11): The Sarawak government has approved 17 road projects in Sibu totaling RM826 million, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

“Infrastructure is fundamental for the future development of Sarawak. We can see the direction our Premier is taking Sarawak, and we want to focus on infrastructure development throughout the state,” Uggah said.

He was speaking during the earthbreaking ceremony for the Jalan Teku Pasai Siong-Kemuyang Road project, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today.

Uggah also highlighted the Sarawak government’s ongoing commitment to the development of key infrastructure, including the second trunk road, coastal road, and several bridges, with the Muara Lassa Bridge being the latest completed milestone.

“By early 2026, if you drive from Kuching to Miri, you will not need to use a ferry anymore as our bridges will be completed,” he said, adding that the funding for these projects comes from the wisdom of Premier Abang Johari, who created alternative funding sources.

On the RM89-million Jalan Teku Pasai Siong-Jalan Kemuyang Sibu project, Uggah said it would have a 700m elevated section, making it the first in Sarawak.

He emphasised the necessity of elevated roads in Sibu, pointing out that the current ride from the airport to the town is often a bumpy experience.

“But this is what we inherited. At that time, we were very happy to have roads, but the time has come to look into new technologies,” he said.

Uggah also underscored the importance of embracing new technologies and construction methodologies, revealing plans to organise programs for the Premier to explore international structures and technologies that could potentially cut costs by half.

“The government is also implementing Building Industry Modelling to enhance project management in terms of cost, efficiency, and coordination with related agencies.

“This new technology is expected to ensure efficient project execution within two years,” he said.
