40 angpows, rice bags handed out to needy in outreach programme
by Sandra Jaboh · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Feb 16): A total of 40 angpows (red packets) and bags of rice were distributed to the needy during a Chinese New Year outreach programme at Jalan Nanas here yesterday.
Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki handed out the aid to the recipients.
“This initiative is aimed at easing their burden as they prepare for festive celebrations, and also reflects the spirit of unity and cooperation among the component parties (in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition) in reaching out to the community,” he told reporters.
The programme saw collaboration between Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Satok branch, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and the Green Road village development and security committee (JKKK).
Ibrahim said the Year of the Horse symbolised energy and strength, and hoped the Chinese community could look forward to a better year ahead.
“Chinese New Year is a time to draw closer to our families and preserve our cultural traditions. Wherever they may be, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. May this year bring good health, prosperity, longevity and may we always be protected,” he said.
