KAPIT (Nov 16): The proposed Trans-Borneo Railway project will be a catalyst for Sarawak’s transformation and is poised to be a game-changer for the state’s mode of transport, to help unlock its immense potential and to propel it towards a new era of economic growth and development,

It is also a crucial component of Sarawak’s transformation into a fully developed state, thus, the move to do the feasibility study on this project is fully supported, said Lating Minggang, the chairman of Kapit District Council (KDC).

Besides that, he added, it will drive economic growth, improve infrastructure and enhance the overall quality of life.

“When it comes to transportation connectivity networks, Sarawak has been lagging behind Peninsular Malaysia for many years. This proposed Trans-Borneo Railway project will help to bridge this gap and to ensure an equitable development across the state.

“While the initial investment may be significant, the long-term benefits of the railway far outweigh the costs. It will generate substantial economic returns and improve the overall well-being of the population”, said Lating.

He pointed out that by linking Sarawak’s diverse regions, the railway will enhance connectivity, facilitating the seamless movement of people, goods and services.

“This will stimulate economic activity and reduce transportation costs. The railway will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, attracting investments and businesses to the state. It will create new industries, generate employment opportunities, and boost local economies,” he said.

Additionally, the railway’s impact will extend beyond direct benefits as it will create multiplier effects, stimulating related industries such as logistics, tourism and construction.

The railway will enhance Sarawak’s tourism appeal, attracting domestic and international tourists. It will provide convenient access to the state’s natural wonders, cultural heritage, and adventure destinations.

“The railway has the potential to transform Sarawak into a regional economic powerhouse. It will enhance the state’s competitiveness, attract foreign investment, and improve the quality of life for its people.

“Furthermore, the railway will have a profound socio-economic impact, reducing poverty, improving access to healthcare and education, and promoting social equity. The construction and operation of the railway will create numerous job opportunities, both directly and indirectly, boosting employment rates,” he added.

Furthermore, the state can capitalise on the potential for cross-border connectivity with Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital, opening up new opportunities for trade, investment and tourism.

“It will undoubtedly help to strengthen regional integration and to position Sarawak as a key player in the global supply chain,” he said.

The railway’s long-term impact will be significant. It will contribute to sustainable development, reduce carbon emissions and improve environmental quality.

A comprehensive feasibility study is essential to assess the project’s technical, financial and environmental viability. It will help identify potential challenges and opportunities, and informed decision-making.

“With the state leaders’ strong stance towards climate change, I’m sure that the proposed railway will be designed and constructed with sustainability in mind, minimising environmental impact and promoting eco-friendly practices.

“The state government’s initiative to do the feasibility study of this proposed Trans-Borneo Railway project is a visionary step towards a brighter future for the state. As the initiative progresses, it is imperative to maintain strong public support and ensure its successful implementation.

“With unwavering commitment and effective execution, Sarawak can solidify its position as a thriving and progressive state,” Lating added.
