58 dogs vaccinated for free in anti-rabies programme by Sibu Chinese community leaders association
by Reno Benjamin · Borneo Post OnlineSIBU (Nov 16): A total of 58 dogs received vaccinations at a free anti-rabies vaccination programme at SJKC Sacred Heart here today.
Of the total, 43 dogs were given their first dose, while 15 received booster shots. Additionally, four dogs were microchipped.
The programme was a joint effort between the Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sibu and Bukit Assek’s Village Development and Safety Committee (JKKK).
Meanwhile, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek chairman Dato Chieng Buong Toon urged dog owners to prevent their pets from roaming freely in order to help contain the rabies outbreak.
He said the rabies outbreak in Sarawak, particularly in Sibu, is concerning, and requires the cooperation of everyone to curb its spread.
“Pet owners, such as dog owners, need to be more responsible and should not let their dogs roam freely all the time,” he told reporters at the vaccination programme today.
Chieng also urged anyone who has been bitten by a dog to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility.
Delaying treatment, he warned, could be life-threatening and may lead to fatal consequences.
On that note, he commended the Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association for its initiative in providing free anti-rabies vaccinations, a vital community service that benefits both pets and the public.
This event marked the seventh anti-rabies vaccination programme organised by the association this year, with the final one scheduled for Permai this December.
