Sejambak Kasih brings Christmas cheer to senior citizens in Serian
by Samuel Aubrey · Borneo Post OnlineSERIAN (Dec 19): A total of 132 senior citizens from Kampung Bunan Gega/Punok and surrounding areas were feted under the Sejambak Kasih programme held in conjunction with the upcoming Christmas celebration.
State Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben said the annual programme is organised ahead of major festive seasons such as Gawai and Christmas as a gesture of care and concern for the well-being of the local community, particularly senior citizens.
“The contribution is meant to help ease the burden of recipients in making preparations for the Christmas celebration on Dec 25,” he said when speaking at the programme on Wednesday.
The Kedup assemblyman added that the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to support the welfare of senior citizens in the area and to ensure that they are not left out during festive occasions.
During the programme, Martin also reminded recipients and representatives present to register as members of the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) programme, which offers various benefits to senior citizens.
Among the benefits, he said, include bereavement assistance to help ease funeral-related expenses, as well as medical assistance.
“KGC cardholders are also eligible to receive RM500 a year for treatment at private clinics registered with the Social Welfare Department,” he added.
