KUCHING (Dec 18): Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (Cahya Mata Sarawak) has officially broken ground on its RM673 million Mambong Clinker Line 2 project, a major expansion set to significantly boost Sarawak’s cement production capacity and strengthen the state’s supply resilience.

The ceremony was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Johari Tun Openg at Cahya Mata Sarawak’s Clinker Plant in Mambong here on Thursday, marking a key milestone in the company’s long-term strategy to modernise and expand its cement operations.

The new clinker line, undertaken by wholly owned subsidiary Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd, will have a production capacity of up to 6,000 metric tonnes per day.

Once completed, Cahya Mata Sarawak’s annual clinker output will increase from 900,000 metric tonnes to about 1.9 million metric tonnes.

In his keynote address, the Premier highlighted that the project will strengthen Sarawak’s industrial capacity while aligning with global climate goals.

He expressed confidence the new line will meet growing domestic demand, particularly from the state’s expanding construction and infrastructure sectors.

“Cahya Mata Sarawak has been part of Sarawak’s development journey for more than five decades, particularly in construction and infrastructure, which have contributed significantly to our economy,” he said.

Abang Johari noted the project reflects Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which prioritises sustainable and inclusive growth as the global economy transitions toward renewable and green energy.

He commended Cahya Mata Sarawak for adopting alternative fuels through waste recovery and producing eco-cement to reduce carbon emissions.

Under the state’s new approach to infrastructure on peat soil, elevated, pile-supported roads will be constructed in key areas to minimise environmental disturbance while maintaining durability, aligning with broader sustainability and carbon management objectives.

Cahya Mata Sarawak group managing director Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib said the expansion strengthens the company’s foundation for growth, improves operational efficiency, incorporates cleaner technologies, and ensures Sarawak’s cement supply security.

Clinker Line 2 will feature energy-efficient technologies, including a Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) generating up to six megawatts of clean energy, and advanced dust filtration systems that reduce emissions to less than half of regulatory limits.

Construction is expected to take approximately two years, with commissioning targeted for the second quarter of 2027.

Once operational, the facility will supply clinker to Cahya Mata Cement’s grinding plants across Sarawak, further integrating the group’s production system.

The Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) works have been awarded to Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of China-based Tianjin Cement Industry Design and Research Institute (TCDRI).

Cahya Mata Sarawak has operated in Sarawak since 1974 and currently manages three cement grinding plants in Kuching and Bintulu, supported by distribution terminals in Sibu and Miri.
