SIBU (Jan 11): A total of 100 underprivileged and needy people from the Chinese community received RM100 ang pau and a hamper each from the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) at the ‘Sejambak Kasih’ programme, yesterday.

Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the event, which took place at the Starlink Hotel, was held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

“We bring festive cheers to recipients in this annual programme,” she said, adding that the programme has been ongoing for over 20 years.

“Our Sarawak government is always ensuring that the welfare of the underprivileged and needy is being taken care of, and it is their commitment to ensure that these people are never neglected,” she said.

Fatimah added that each recipient of the monthly assistance will also receive an additional RM100.

“The remaining recipients who did not show up today will see the RM100 being credited to their respective bank account,” she said.

According to her, there are 8,135 Chinese recipients of monthly assistance in Sarawak, with 1,819 of them being in Sibu.

In 2024, a total of 56,044 monthly assistance recipients were recorded, involving a total aid amount of RM258,491,300.
