Relief as Aidilfitri confirmed for Saturday after early-date speculation
by Aliah Abdullah · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (March 20): Speculation that Hari Raya Aidilfitri might arrive a day earlier than expected had Muslims across the country scrambling to complete last-minute preparations — only to breathe a collective sigh of relief when the official announcement confirmed the celebration would fall on Saturday (March 21).
The uncertainty over a possible early Raya on Friday (March 20) had sparked concern, particularly among those juggling work commitments and unfinished festive preparations.
For 63-year-old Zainab Sauni, the extra day made all the difference.
“I felt quite anxious at first when rumours started going around that Raya might fall early because my preparations were not complete, especially decorating the house. I was still busy with work,” she said.
However, she shared that the official announcement brought a sense of relief.
“I’m grateful because I now have more time to prepare, like buying snacks and drinks for the celebration,” she added, noting that the additional time also allows her to rest before visiting relatives.
Similarly, Nur Nabilah Abdul Hak, 32, said she was initially worried due to prior commitments.
“I felt confused and concerned because I had pre-ordered food that needed to be collected a day before Raya. I was worried about managing my time,” she said.
Once the date was confirmed, she said her concerns eased.
“I feel much calmer now and can continue performing tarawih prayers without worrying too much,” she added, noting that the extra time also helped her family tidy up their home.
Meanwhile, for Iqbal Huzaimi Hamdani, 25, the situation was met with a more laid-back response.
“I didn’t have any strong reaction, and I feel quite neutral about the announcement,” he said.
Having been busy working throughout the fasting month, he said most of the preparations were handled by his family.
“I feel quite calm about this year’s Raya celebration since I’ve been working every day, and the preparations have been taken care of by my family,” he said.
With the official announcement, he believes many will benefit from the confirmed date, especially for families travelling back to their hometowns for the celebration.
