SIBU (Dec 19): The RM35 million Daro waterfront development project, expected to be fully completed by Nov 20, 2027, is set to become a new landmark in the area.

Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad said the project aims to enhance the riverfront landscape while serving as a catalyst for economic and tourism growth in Daro.

“It is part of the Sarawak government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure development and enhance the well-being of the people, particularly in rural and riverine areas,” he said at the ceremony marking the commencement of the project at the site on Friday.

Safiee said the project is not only intended to beautify the waterfront but also to create a new attraction that can stimulate local economic activities through tourism, small and medium enterprises, and the provision of recreational spaces for the community.

“This project is expected to become a new icon for the Daro district, while enhancing its image as a rapidly developing and competitive district,” he said.

He stressed that the project’s success depends on close cooperation among all parties, including the implementing agency, contractors, consultants, as well as support from the local community.

“I hope all parties will play their respective roles and provide full cooperation to ensure this project is completed on schedule, with the highest quality, and delivers long-term benefits to the people,” he added.

Safiee also expressed appreciation to the implementing agency Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) for its commitment and continuous efforts in ensuring the project is carried out effectively.

He said the Daro Waterfront development aligns with the Sarawak government’s aspiration to promote balanced development between urban and rural areas, while improving the quality of life through modern and inclusive public facilities.

Also present at the ceremony were DID Sarawak senior assistant director Faizal Haji Suki, Daro district officer Zul Haji Usup, Matu Daro district police chief DSP Rahim Mihos, Pemanca Lau Oi Phen as well as representatives from the project’s consultants and contractors.
