Dua Lipa Got a ‘Midnight Manicure’—and It’s So Chic and Unexpected for Summer

The pop star just got back to the States after a gorgeous wedding and honeymoon in Italy, stepping out in NYC in a mix of casual ‘fits and chic date-night looks. But what took me the most is her current nail color: A shiny, jet-black. Interesting choice for the dead of summer, huh?
We’re used to seeing Dua in a host of summer nail trends, from gemstone florals to black-and-white daisies to every color of chrome under the sun. But this black mani feels like a grungy departure.

Dua’s “midnight mani” is deeply chic, partly because it’s so unexpected. But I get it: She just spent weeks in a sunny, lover’s haze with her new husband Callum Turner by her side. Being back in the city after all that would make you a little emo, right? And I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m feeling the summertime sadness right now too. An inky manicure feels like the antithesis of months’ worth of vivid, tropical hues.
Paired with a long, almond shape, the cornerstone of this manicure is lots of shine. Start with two to three coats of black polish. And no matter what, don’t skimp on top coat. Better yet, opt for a gel mani, which holds shine much longer (and will eliminate chips—a chipped black mani, although nostalgic, isn’t quite the look here).
