The Real Star of Movie Night on ‘Love Island USA’? The Manosphere
· CosmopolitanI clock into my part-time job as a viewer of Love Island USA and UK each summer. I watch and dissect every morsel of the show with pride. But season 8’s Movie Night was probably the hardest watch of my career.
We wait for it every season: the one night when all hell breaks loose in the Villa and the Islanders get to see, in 4K, exactly what we viewers at home have been hammering on about. Secret make-outs, missed connections, shit-talking your friends—it’s juicy, salacious, and usually entertaining. But this year, it’s been brutal. Because when it’s all compiled, back to back to back, the central piece in every “movie” is just an underlying lack of respect for women.
The conversation around Love Island’s descent into the “manosphere” isn’t new. It’s been brought up for a few seasons, highlighting how misogyny and “male empowerment” have infiltrated modern dating. But season 8 is less covert, especially when displayed in full during Movie Night.
Movie Night opened with footage of Zach in Casa Amor exploring his connection with Alannah, an Islander who, a few days later, was removed from the Villa when videos of her using a slur surfaced. Since Zach returned from Casa, his defense in every single argument or conversation with Kayda has been that he chose her in the end. He continuously weaponizes coming back to Kayda, as if he’s some prize that she should be grateful for. Meanwhile, before Casa, when Kayda had one measly conversation with Caleb, Zach got so upset, he refused to make her breakfast. It’s a double standard that only he wants to benefit from.
The most anticipated footage, though, was of KC. Fans have been waiting for Aniya to see just how hurtful he has been from the beginning. The movie opened with KC’s conversation with Corbin about his and Aniya’s lack of physical intimacy. “Me and Aniya ain’t done shit,” KC says, and then called her a “grandma.” Reminder: They’ve only known each other for a few weeks, but he expects her to be sexually forward, largely because he’s nice to her and compliments her.
Then he is with Titi and Aniya is with Carl, and he can’t even be happy for Aniya. “She’s on a thin-ass line,” he says. “I think I have more leeway because I literally spoke life into her every fucking day,” meaning he thinks that he can “explore” (er, kiss and cuddle with two women in Casa Amor). After all, he gave her a few empty compliments and wrongfully assured her multiple times that what they had was good. On Movie Night, when his disregard for her was on full display, he had no defense. And no remorse.
Still, 25 episodes in, KC brings up the fact that no one was behind his door on the first night. But Jen nailed it perfectly when she said to Aniya, “You wanted him, but because he doesn’t feel wanted by all of us, that means he doesn’t feel wanted.” He was too afraid of further rejection to actually pursue any of the women aside from Aniya. And you can see it in how he handles his attraction to Sol. He looks at her from afar but won’t get to know her until the very last second, when it’s evident she doesn’t have any other options and is ready to pack her bags.
A huge aspect of the manosphere is the idea that men are alphas who should be chased and desired. And we see this time and time again in the Villa this season. Even Bryce, easily the best male Islander, associates his connection with Trinity with how good she makes him feel about himself. KC loves how Titi makes him feel confident. Sincere says all he’s had to do with Melanie is “chase,” so he feels wanted by Sol because he was the only person she was getting to know.
I’m a lesbian, so maybe I just don’t know: Is this what dating men in 2026 is like? Do you have to reassure them over and over again that you want them? Aniya did that, and KC still didn’t feel good enough.
Movie Night didn’t make me gasp or clutch my pearls or text my group chat live updates. I just stared in disbelief. The way these women have been slighted, all wrapped into 10 neat little movies, just felt so bleak.
Hopefully, the girls will give these men their comeuppance in part 2. Or maybe they can just bring in Megan Thee Stallion again. She always lightens the mood when the show gets heavy.
