Why Is ‘Love Island USA’ So Much Shorter Than ‘Love Island UK’?
· CosmopolitanLove Island USA and Love Island UK are airing simultaneously this summer, and if you’re watching both, I am…impressed! But there is one key difference: While both reality shows premiered in the same week, Love Island USA will end a lot sooner.
Love Island USA typically airs for about 6 weeks and 37 episodes—at least that’s been the trajectory since season 4 (seasons 1–3 were shorter). Meanwhile, Love Island UK lasts for 8 weeks total and 58 episodes.
So…why is Love Island USA so much shorter than its counterpart across the pond? Nothing’s been confirmed by execs as far as we can tell, but there are plenty of theories. For starters, Love Island is a relatively new phenomenon in the USA and a huge time commitment for viewers. It’s possible Peacock wanted to start things off more slowly, vs. asking the audience to commit to watching every night of the week for eight weeks. It’s also possible that as the US fan base grows, Peacock will increase the number of episodes to match the vibes over on Love Island UK.
The good news is we still have plenty more episodes of Love Island USA Season 8 to come! Casa Amor continues this week, Movie Night is (hopefully) incoming, and the finale is expected to air on or around July 12 (if the show follows its usual trajectory). Buckle up for a few more weeks of chaos at least, and here’s to hoping that Peacock surprises us with a longer season.
