The accident occurred as the plane was arriving from the eastern city of Santa Cruz, where it had picked up cargo. Local reports said two of the six crew members were still missing.
The aircraft was transporting new banknotes from the Central Bank of Bolivia when it overshot the runway at El Alto International Airport and hit a busy highway. The plane skidded onto Costanera Avenue in poor weather, crushing several vehicles.
Emergency teams arrived to rescue survivors and collect scattered currency. The airport, one of the highest in the world, was closed while officials identified the victims and began investigating the cause of the crash.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show bystanders rushing to gather the banknotes scattered across the crash area.
