NHS alliance welcomes findings on growing use of AI in mental health support
by Harriet Belderbos · Open Access GovernmentThe NHS Alliance has welcomed new findings from the British Psychological Society (BPS) highlighting the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) among people seeking mental health support
Published on 30 October 2026, the response showed the growing concerns among mental health professionals about how widespread AI use affects people accessing support. The findings are expected to help improve understanding of how individuals are turning to AI to manage their mental health and the challenges this may present for clinicians.
Growing concerns over AI in mental health
As AI tools become more accessible, more people are exploring them for mental health advice, emotional support and guidance. While these technologies may offer opportunities to improve access to information, questions remain about their safety, reliability and suitability.
The NHS Alliance has stressed that further research is needed to understand how different groups are using AI, particularly people living with serious mental health conditions. A clearer understanding of these experiences will help identify potential risks and ensure individuals receive appropriate support.
Supporting safe and responsible AI use
The organisation has also highlighted the need for better guidance for mental health providers, many of which are looking for advice on how to introduce and use AI safely within their services.
To address this, the NHS Alliance recently published its report, Demystifying AI in Mental Health, which guides to help organisations better understand the technology and its potential role in mental health care.
It has also contributed to Mind’s Mental Health in the Age of AI commission, a project exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence and mental health in greater detail.
Government strategy could shape the future
The upcoming cross-government mental health strategy presents an opportunity to establish how digital technology and AI can help people access timely, accurate and appropriate mental health care.
The NHS Alliance believes that collaboration across healthcare providers, technology organisations, policymakers and wider society will be essential to making the most of AI while reducing potential harm.
As AI use continues to grow, ensuring technology complements rather than replaces appropriate mental health care will remain an important consideration.
