‘Calabasas’: Netflix Gives Series Order to Teen Romance Drama From ‘Bridgerton’ Creator and Kim Kardashian

by · Variety

When you’re done keeping up with the Kardashians and devouring the secrets of “Calabasas Confidential,” enter the gates of “Calabasas,” a scripted series set in the Los Angeles enclave.

The project, led by “Bridgerton” creator Chris Van Dusen and executive producers Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts, was acquired by Netflix in 2024 after a bidding war. The streamer has now given it a series order, marking the first show announced under an exclusive scripted deal between Netflix and Van Dusen.

“Calabasas” is based on the book “If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous Now” by Via Bleidner. The updated logline reads as follows: “At an elite private school in the country’s most exclusive town, the headmaster’s ambitious daughter is destined to have it all – until she’s swept into a forbidden romance with the one boy determined to burn down her glittering world instead of play by its rules. In Calabasas, where desires are never as clean as appearances suggest, falling in love might be the most dangerous rebellion of all.”

Netflix made the announcement during their Upfronts presentation, keeping mum on any information relating to casting or production for the series.

“Calabasas” is the second upcoming show on Netflix set in the California neighborhood, which in the 2010s became an object of fascination thanks to the Kardashians and a handful of high-profile rap songs. (Calabasas is or was once home to celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Drake, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Kendrick Lamar and more.)

That other project is “Calabasas Confidential,” a reality series out May 29 about a group of friends and exes who return to their “parents’ hillside mansions” after graduating college. The key art for the series depicts a manicured hand clutching sunglasses, a BMW car key and what appears to be an Erewhon smoothie.
