NBC 2026 Fall Schedule: ‘The Traitors’ Set for Thursdays, ‘Rockford Files’ Reboot Held for Midseason

by · Variety

NBC has unveiled its fall schedule for the 2026-2027 broadcast season, which includes the new broadcast edition of “The Traitors.”

As previously announced, the NBC version of the hit competition series will feature non-celebrity contestants and Emmy-winning host Alan Cumming as the Faithful seek to oust the Traitors to claim the show’s $250,000 cash prize. It will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT as the lead in for “Law & Order: SVU,” followed by “Law & Order” at 10 p.m.

“The Hunting Party” previously aired on Thursdays after the “Law & Order” block last fall. That show is still awaiting word on its fate for a third season, making it the only NBC primetime scripted show without a formal renewal or cancellation.

“Law & Order” was recently renewed for a 26th season, but it had reportedly been on the bubble this season with no guarantee of a return in the fall. However, Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBC & Peacock, said that was not in fact the case.

“I think it’s a bit of a misrepresentation that it was on the bubble,” she said. “I think we were looking at…all the different slots and opportunities, and figuring out what went where and how many episodes. So it was just more of a little bit of math, to be honest.”

The “One Chicago” block will continue on Wednesday nights. Leading off is “Chicago Med” at 8 p.m., followed by “Chicago Fire” and finally “Chicago PD.”

NBC is also making room for its two new dramas and two new comedies. New drama “Line of Fire” starring Peter Krause and Hope Davis, about a family in law enforcement becomes entangled in a deadly conspiracy, will air Mondays at 10 p.m. in September following a two-hour episode of “The Voice,” which will feature the return of coach Kelly Clarkson. Then in October and November, the show will still air at 10 p.m. after a one-hour episode of “The Voice,” with NBC again airing the comedy “St. Denis Medical” at 8 p.m. Season 2 of “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins” will shift to the fall at 8:30 Mondays at that time.

Fellow freshman series “Newlyweds,” a multi-cam comedy starring real-life husband and wife Téa Leoni and Tim Daly along with executive producer Jamie Lee Curtis, will air on Fridays at 8:30 after new episodes of “Happy’s Place.”

The two other new shows — a reboot of “The Rockford Files” starring David Boreanaz and the comedy “Sunset PI” from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” team of Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici and starring Jake Johnson — will both bow at midseason. “Rockford Files” is slated to bow in January, while “Sunset PI” is set for February.

Both “Rockford” and “Sunset PI” have had strong buzz since they were first announced as pilot pickups at NBC.

On the decision to hold both shows for midseason, NBC’s president of program planning strategy said, “It’s largely because of the time periods they’re going into. We are putting ‘Traitors’ Thursday at 8, and we also think that is a great time period for ‘Rockford.’ And ‘Reggie Dinkins’ was a midseason show that’s just finishing up its first run. We wanted to bring that back in the fall, and then we will bring in ‘Sunset PI’ later in the season, after ‘Reggie Dinkins’ has had its run.”

“I think also, as Jeff said, we think ‘Rockford’s’ a great 8 p.m. show, and we didn’t have an 8 p.m. time period in the fall,” Katz added. “So it’s an opportunity to put it where we think it’ll get the biggest and best audience.”

NBC has also announced a series pickup for a game show version of “Wordle” hosted by “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie. That show was first reported to be in the works in October 2025, with Guthrie confirming the series pickup herself on “Today.” Other unscripted series returning to NBC this summer are “America’s Got Talent,” “American Ninja Warrior” and “Password.” As previously announced, “Destination X” will return in 2027.

As previously announced, NBC will air the 78th Emmy Awards on Sept. 14 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

On the sports side, NFL coverage of “Sunday Night Football” is back, as are multiple NBA regular season games starting in October. “Sunday Night Basketball” coverage will begin mid-winter. In the spring, NBC will air the NBA playoffs and “Sunday Night Baseball.” The Peacock network is also still home college football like the Big Ten Conference, WNBA regular season and playoff games, and the wild card playoffs for the MLB postseason.

NBC is also prepping a three-hour special for Dec. 10 that will celebrate the network’s 100th anniversary. Many details are still to be announced, but the special will originate from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Other specials include “The Americas: A Wild 250th” to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The special is said to showcase “iconic American species whose deep connection to the land and the nation’s history have left an indelible mark on the country. From the majestic bald eagle to fearless bison and clever sea lions, each animal reflects a brave American spirit worth honoring.”

NBC will also air “The Americas: Mother’s Day” in 2027. The description for that special states, “The wildest moms on Earth prove that love, resilience and a little ingenuity can conquer just about anything. Set against the nation’s sweeping landscapes, the special reveals how animal motherhood is shaped by the environments they inhabit and the legacy of the land itself. Both heartfelt and illuminating, it offers a fresh perspective on familiar stories, reminding us that raising the next generation is the greatest adventure of all.”

Both of “The Americas” specials are executive produced by Mike Gunton (“Life,” “Planet Earth II,” “Dynasties”) and Holly Spearing for BBC Studios Natural History Unit in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio.
