That spare NVMe SSD from your last computer upgrade doesn’t have to stay in a drawer. Give it an enclosure, and you’ve got portable storage for photos, video projects, and backups. UGREEN’s approach adds a useful detail: the USB-C cable comes with you because it’s built in.

The UGREEN M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure (95846FX) turns an internal SSD into external storage. It combines a built-in USB-C cable, 10Gbps connectivity, and an aluminum housing designed for carrying files between computers. The enclosure supports several NVMe drive sizes and capacities up to 8TB, although the SSD itself is sold separately.

A built-in USB-C cable keeps things organized

A portable drive isn’t much use if its cable is still on your desk. UGREEN builds a 7.9-inch USB-C cable into the enclosure, so there’s one less thing to pack. The built-in cable stores neatly with the enclosure.

The package also includes a USB-A adapter for computers without USB-C ports. This allows the same enclosure to connect to different systems, although transfer speeds depend on the computer’s USB interface.

If your desktop’s USB ports are tucked behind the tower, check that the 7.9-inch cable will reach. A detachable cable offers more flexibility for that setup and is simpler to swap if it gets damaged.

For users who frequently move files between laptops, the built-in cable offers a convenient alternative to carrying separate accessories.

10Gbps connectivity, with real-world limits.

The enclosure offers 10Gbps USB-C connectivity, providing enough bandwidth for common storage tasks such as transferring video projects, photo libraries, and backups.

Think of 10Gbps as the connection’s ceiling, not the speed of every file copy. Your SSD, computer, USB connection, and the files you’re moving all affect the result.

UGREEN also includes UASP support, which can improve storage communication efficiency on compatible systems. This feature may benefit workloads involving multiple file operations, although improvements vary depending on the operating system and hardware.

A high-performance NVMe SSD will not reach its full internal PCIe speeds through this enclosure because the USB interface limits available bandwidth. For everyday backups and file transfers, that limitation may be acceptable, but users requiring faster sustained transfers should consider higher-bandwidth alternatives.

Aluminum housing and thermal pad help control heat

NVMe SSDs generate heat during operation, particularly when transferring large amounts of data. Excessive temperatures can cause some drives to reduce performance, making heat management relevant when choosing an enclosure.

UGREEN uses an aluminum housing and thermal pad designed to help transfer heat away from the installed SSD. The enclosure also provides a protective shell that makes an internal drive more practical to carry between locations.

However, these cooling features do not guarantee that every SSD will maintain maximum performance. Thermal behavior depends on the installed drive, surrounding temperature, workload, and contact between the SSD and thermal pad.

The enclosure relies on passive heat management rather than active cooling. Users should still avoid unnecessary impacts, moisture, and extreme temperatures when transporting their storage devices.

Supports four M.2 NVMe SSD sizes

Choosing the correct enclosure requires checking more than the physical appearance of an SSD. M.2 drives come in different lengths and can use different storage protocols, even when their connectors look similar.

The UGREEN 95846FX supports M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 NVMe SSDs, including compatible M-key and B+M-key configurations. It accommodates supported drives with capacities up to 8TB, allowing users to select storage based on their needs.

Check the drive’s protocol before you buy: this enclosure takes NVMe, not M.2 SATA. A similar-looking connector doesn’t make a SATA drive compatible.

UGREEN includes an installation toolkit for fitting a compatible drive inside the housing. The SSD must be purchased separately or supplied by the user, and a new drive may require partitioning and formatting before use.

Plug-and-play compatibility across operating systems

The enclosure supports Windows, macOS, and Linux without requiring additional drivers for ordinary operation. Moving files between operating systems also requires a file system that each computer can read and write.

UGREEN also lists support for TRIM and SMART. TRIM tells a compatible SSD which data blocks are no longer in use. SMART allows supported software to retrieve available information about drive health.

These functions depend on the installed SSD, operating system, and software being used. Their availability does not guarantee identical behavior across every computer, particularly when monitoring drive health through USB.

The enclosure can also enter sleep mode after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity. This feature may reduce unnecessary power consumption when the drive remains connected but is not actively transferring data.

Who should buy the UGREEN M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure?

If you’ve already got a compatible NVMe drive, this gives it a useful second job. You can also choose your own SSD and build around it, with a built-in cable and USB-A adapter ready for moving between computers.

Check your drive’s compatibility and your computer’s USB speed first. If you’d rather skip installing a drive altogether, a ready-made portable SSD is the simpler route.
