A compact blade for everyday cuts

The Marmoset has a 2.20-inch cleaver-style blade with full-tang construction. Both the blade and handle are short enough to make this a compact EDC knife rather than a scaled-down outdoor knife.

That size should suit routine jobs such as opening packages or cutting cord. It also sets a clear limit: if you need longer slicing strokes, more reach, or a fuller grip for extended work, a larger knife will make more sense.

The blade’s squared-off profile gives the Marmoset a distinctive look and a relatively straight cutting edge. It does not, by itself, establish how well the knife cuts. Edge geometry, sharpening, heat treatment, and the material being cut all matter. We have not tested the D0704, so its shape is best treated as a design choice rather than a performance claim.

Check the steel when comparing models

The D0704 uses AEB-L stainless steel, while earlier Marmoset versions used 14C28N. That makes the model number worth checking when you compare listings: not every Marmoset has the same blade steel.

AEB-L has a fine-grained structure and a history in razor and cutting-tool applications. Still, the alloy name cannot tell you exactly how this particular knife will perform. We have not independently measured the D0704’s hardness, edge retention, sharpening behavior, or toughness.

Full tang, no folding mechanism

Full-tang construction means the blade steel continues through the handle. There is no pivot to rotate or lock to engage: once you draw the Marmoset from its sheath, the blade is ready to use.

That removes the folding mechanism, but it is not proof that the Marmoset is tougher than every similarly sized folder. Durability also depends on factors such as blade geometry, heat treatment, and construction quality.

The practical distinction is simpler. If you prefer an always-ready fixed blade and are willing to carry a sheath, the Marmoset offers that experience in a smaller package.

The sheath makes or breaks the carry

A folder encloses its edge when closed. The Marmoset needs a separate sheath, making the carry system as important as the knife’s dimensions.

This version comes with a slim, taco-style Kydex sheath and a revised stainless-steel clip. Vosteed says the clip allows position and tension adjustment and has two anti-slip stops. Those options sound useful, but we have not carried the setup, so sheath retention, comfort, draw resistance, and long-term clip durability remain open questions.

A bulky or awkward sheath could erase much of a small fixed blade’s convenience. Before choosing the Marmoset over a folder, consider where you would carry it and whether a separate sheath fits your routine.

Micarta and a short grip

The D0704 uses Micarta handle scales. That detail helps distinguish it from Marmoset variants with other handle materials and is another reason to check the exact model before buying.

On a knife this small, grip comfort is particularly personal. The Marmoset’s compact handle may give one person enough room for controlled utility cuts while feeling cramped to another. Without hands-on use, it would be premature to claim that its size works equally well for every hand or task.

Who is the Marmoset for?

The Vosteed Marmoset D0704 makes the most sense for someone who already likes fixed blades but usually finds them too large for everyday carry. Its 2.20-inch AEB-L blade and 5.31-inch overall length put its knife-only dimensions in compact-folder territory, while its full-tang construction avoids a folding mechanism.

A folder is still the simpler choice if you want the blade enclosed in the handle and do not want a separate sheath. A larger fixed blade is better suited to jobs that demand more reach or a fuller grip.
