July’s American Airlines luggage pairs nostalgia with built-in tracking

I’ve traveled millions and millions of miles over the last 30 years, and I’ll tell you this: luggage is the most important part of travel. Whether it’s a backpack, an all-in-one bag, or some combination, your setup has to work for the way you move. July’s new American Airlines collection caught my attention because it brings a little airline history to that very practical decision.

My own airline journey started with TWA flights into St. Louis back in 1997. Later I flew America West, then US Airways, and now I’m circling back to American Airlines. Seeing this collaboration is pretty cool. There are a lot of years of travel wrapped up in those names for me.

The July x American Airlines collection celebrates American’s centennial with two hard-shell cases: a US$345 Carry On and a US$425 Checked Expandable. Both include CaseSafe tracking inside the TSA lock. The colors get your attention, but the size and shipping details deserve a look before you plan a trip around one.

The old American colors do the work

The two colors take their cues from American’s Astrojet era. Navy pairs cream piping with a red zipper, while the red version uses blue piping and a blue zipper. Silver-look zipper teeth and hardware finish both designs.

The beige leather-wrapped carry handles have American’s 1960s logo, and the lining brings in the airline’s Astrojet colors and classic Vignelli-designed Silverbird mark. The contrasting stitching, riveted corner bumpers and matching wheels give the whole collection a coordinated look without covering the shell in a giant airline logo.

Each case also comes with a set of 12 luggage stickers. You can leave the exterior clean or add more of the travel-poster look.

Tracking is built into the lock

CaseSafe works with Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, so you can look for the suitcase through the network that matches your phone. Having the tracker built into the lock saves you from finding a separate place for a tag.

It runs on a replaceable CR2032 coin battery. There’s also a warranty distinction worth knowing: July’s CaseSafe FAQ gives the tracker a two-year manufacturing-fault warranty, separate from the suitcase’s lifetime coverage for manufacturing faults that affect its function. “Lifetime warranty” doesn’t apply to every component in the same way.

The rest of the hardware is familiar July territory: a German polycarbonate shell, four spinner wheels, a telescoping handle with 20 height settings, an internal Y-strap compression system and a laundry bag.

Check the carry-on width before buying

The collection’s Carry On lists a 42-liter capacity and a weight of 7.4 pounds. Its published exterior dimensions, including the wheels, are 21.5 inches high, 14.5 inches wide and 8.5 inches deep.

That width is the detail I’d check first. American’s carry-on limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including handles and wheels. On the published measurements, the July case is half an inch wider than American’s limit. The airline branding doesn’t provide an exception to the baggage rules, and the case still needs to fit the airport sizer. Some aircraft and airports have additional restrictions.

Our earlier July Carry-On Pro review raised a sizing concern with that different model, too. Checking the dimensions remains good advice.

If you’re buying the larger case, the Checked Expandable starts at 80 liters and opens up to 90 liters. That gives you another 10 liters for the return trip, although your airline’s checked-bag weight allowance still applies.

The color you choose changes the wait

The collection launched September 21, but current shipping estimates matter more than the launch date if you’ve got a trip coming up. As of October 3, July’s U.S. store lists the navy Carry On and both Checked Expandable colors as preorders shipping from October 18. The red Carry On has a longer wait, with shipping from January 2027. Those are shipping estimates, not promised arrival dates.

For me, the appeal is the connection to all those years of flying. The heritage details make this an interesting collection, and integrated tracking adds a practical reason to look beyond the colors. I’d sort out the Carry On’s width and the delivery timing before choosing one. A bag can bring back good travel memories and still need to earn its place on the next trip.

Preorder timing varies by size and color. Carry On buyers should compare the listed 14.5-inch width with their airline’s limit.
