Breville’s Barista Express is $499.95 right now, down from $699.95, and the cut runs across all three finishes. That’s $200 off, 29% off, on the espresso machine that has quietly owned the home counter for over a decade. Brushed stainless steel, black sesame, and black truffle all sit at the same $499.95, so the color choice costs nothing extra this time.
Pricing this low usually attaches to a single finish a retailer wants gone. This one is a manufacturer promotion, and it shows the same $499.95 at store after store. Amazon carries all three finishes at the price, in stock, and all three were re-verified at that figure before this post was staged.

Three finishes, one price
Brushed stainless steel (BES870XL) is the original look, all brushed metal and black trim. Black sesame (BES870BSXL) takes the body black and keeps the same dials, gauge, and portafilter layout. Black truffle (BES870BTR) is the newer dark finish, softer than the sesame and closer to charcoal. Under the panels, the three are the same machine, part for part.
Pick on looks and on what survives your kitchen lighting. Stainless shows fingerprints and wipes clean in seconds. Dark finishes hide both until the light catches them. None of that changes the shot, and at $499.95 for each, neither does the receipt.
Grind, dose, tamp
A stainless conical burr grinder sits on top, fed by a half pound bean hopper, with 16 grind settings on the dial. Grind amount has its own dial, and the ground coffee drops straight into the 54mm portafilter. Grinding fresh right before extraction skips the separate grinder, the scale routine, and the counter space both would take.
Dose lands around 18 grams with the included baskets, and Breville includes single and dual wall baskets in 1 cup and 2 cup sizes. Dual wall baskets forgive a rough grind while you learn. Single wall baskets reward the dialing in once your grind and tamp settle down.
Pressure and heat
Extraction runs on a 15 bar Italian pump with low pressure pre infusion first. Water starts gently, wets the puck, and then pressure builds to the 9 bar extraction range. An analog gauge on the front panel shows where each shot lands, and it teaches faster than any app. Shots that choke or gush tell you exactly which way to move the grind dial next.
A 1600W Thermocoil heats the water, and PID control holds the temperature steady through the shot. Temperature swings are what turn a good puck sour or flat, so steady heat isn’t a spec sheet decoration here. It’s the difference between repeating a good shot and chasing one.
Milk, textured by hand
Milk work is manual, through a swivel steam wand and the stainless jug in the box. Breville rates the wand at 266 degrees, and it has the steam to turn cold milk into glossy microfoam that pours like wet paint. Lattes and cappuccinos are on you, your pitcher angle, and about a week of practice.
Manual texturing is the real trade in this machine. Pod machines and super-automatics froth at a button press and give you foam you can’t steer. Here you learn the skill once, and every milk drink after that pours the way you meant it to.
Size, tank, and what is in the box
Footprint runs 12.5 inches wide, 13.8 inches deep, and 15.9 inches high, at 22.1 pounds. That height needs a clear look at your upper cabinets before you order, hopper included. A removable 67 ounce water tank sits at the back, big enough that refills land every few days instead of every morning.
In the box you get the Razor dose trimming tool, the 54mm stainless portafilter, four filter baskets, a coffee scoop, the integrated tamper, the milk jug, cleaning disc and tablets, a brush tool and Allen key, plus the water filter and its holder. Registering the machine with Breville also adds two free bags of specialty coffee under the current promotion, terms applying.
Where this leaves the Barista Express
We covered this machine in February as the espresso maker that refuses to change, and the short version still holds. Newer Breville models add touchscreens and assisted tamping, and they charge for both. This one keeps dials, a gauge, and a manual wand, and at $699.95 that restraint was already the pitch.
At $499.95, the math changes. Full price history and our earlier take on the machine live in the February Barista Express feature. Nothing about the hardware changed since then. Only the number did, and a $200 cut on the standard pick in the category is the kind of deal Black Friday is supposed to produce.
Buy it if you want real espresso at home and you’re willing to spend the first week learning grind, dose, and steam. Skip it if you want a button press and a pod. Abt lists the manufacturer rebate behind this price as ending November 9, so the window here is short.

One machine, three finishes, one price through the weekend. If a Barista Express has been sitting in a saved list waiting for a reason, $200 off is the reason.
