Casio is giving its octagonal G-Steel a detailed makeover for the 2027 Lunar New Year. The G-Shock GBM-2100CXG-9A pairs a laser-engraved, gold-colored bezel with bharal-inspired artwork, while retaining the Tough Solar charging and Bluetooth connectivity of the GBM-2100 platform.

Inspired by the Year of the Goat, the watch features an engraved gold-colored bezel and a black dial decorated with the bharal, a wild mountain sheep also known as the blue sheep. It retains the established GBM-2100 platform, including Tough Solar charging, Bluetooth connectivity, shock resistance, and 200-meter water resistance.

An Engraved Bezel Inspired by the Bharal
The GBM-2100CXG-9A uses a gold-colored stainless steel bezel with intricate laser engraving inspired by the bharal and its mountainous habitat. Small animal silhouettes appear within the pattern, creating a decorative finish without changing the familiar octagonal case.
The black dial features additional animal artwork, gold-colored hands and hour markers, and selective red accents. Red accents add contrast to the black-and-gold dial, while the black resin strap keeps the focus on the engraved bezel.
The bezel receives gold-colored ion plating rather than being made from solid gold. Although G-Shock construction is designed to withstand impacts, the decorative surface can still develop visible scratches and wear through regular use.
The design follows the 2026 Year of the Horse GBM-2100CX-9A, which featured different engraved artwork. Both models use the same underlying G-Steel platform, making their visual treatment the primary distinction.
Familiar G-Steel Construction
The watch measures 49.3 × 44.4 × 11.9mm and weighs approximately 72 grams. Its width gives it a substantial appearance, although the relatively slim case distinguishes it from bulkier G-Shock models.
Construction combines stainless steel with resin components, including bio-based resin in the case and strap. These materials incorporate renewable biological resources but do not make the watch entirely biodegradable.
The strap accommodates wrists measuring approximately 145 to 215mm. Its resin construction also keeps the weight lower than a comparable watch fitted with a full stainless steel bracelet.
Shock resistance and 200-meter water resistance support regular exposure to impacts and water when the watch is used according to Casio’s instructions. Mineral glass protects the dial, although buyers who prioritize scratch resistance may prefer models equipped with sapphire crystal.
Tough Solar Reduces Battery Maintenance
Casio’s Tough Solar system converts light into electrical energy and stores it in a rechargeable battery. This reduces the need for conventional battery replacement and eliminates routine charging through a cable.
Casio rates battery operation at approximately seven months after a full charge without additional light exposure under normal conditions. With power-saving mode enabled and the watch stored in darkness, the estimated duration increases to 18 months.
Actual performance depends on light exposure, feature use, and battery condition. A battery-level indicator and power-saving function help owners manage charging, particularly when alternating between several watches.
Bluetooth Adds Useful Everyday Functions
The GBM-2100CXG-9A connects to compatible smartphones through Bluetooth using the CASIO WATCHES app. Mobile Link supports automatic time adjustment and easier access to watch settings.
The app provides access to approximately 300 world-time cities, reminders, a phone-finder function, and Time & Place recording through the connected smartphone. These features are useful for travelers or anyone managing schedules across different time zones.
The watch remains functional without Bluetooth, with standalone accuracy rated at ±15 seconds per month. Smartphone pairing is therefore optional for ordinary timekeeping.
Additional functions include a stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms, and a full automatic calendar. Dual LED illumination helps make the dial and digital display readable in darkness, while the hand-shift function temporarily moves the hands away from information shown underneath them.
Unlike a conventional smartwatch, the G-Steel focuses on timekeeping rather than messaging, health tracking, or extensive notifications. Its solar-powered operation also avoids the frequent charging associated with many connected wearables.

Who Should Buy the Casio GBM-2100CXG-9A?
The GBM-2100CXG-9A suits buyers who appreciate G-Shock’s octagonal design but want a distinctive version of the G-Steel platform. Its engraved bezel and Lunar New Year artwork provide the main reason to choose it over a standard GBM-2100.
Tough Solar charging, Bluetooth time adjustment, and 200-meter water resistance make it practical beyond its commemorative appearance. Buyers who prefer understated styling, sapphire crystal, or a full-metal bracelet may want to consider other watches.
