The free school meals programme is to be overhauled after two independent reviews highlighted a number of shortcomings.

The studies found that almost 20% of meals remain not eaten, and that many offerings were low in vegetables, fruit and wholegrain carbohydrates.

On the other hand, almost two thirds of teachers and principals believe the scheme is having a positive impact.

Free meals are available in more than 3,000 primary schools, and cost in the region of €300m a year.
