New AI Office to develop trust in the technology - Burke

The State's new AI Office will play a key role in developing public trust in the technology, according to Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke.

Oifig Intleacht Shaorga na hÉireann - the AI Office of Ireland - is based in the Department of Enterprise, but it is fully independent.

The Cabinet heard today that Paul Byrne is the new Chief Executive of the Office.

It is tasked with ensuring that Ireland meets its obligations under the EU AI Act as well as carrying out its own research.

Mr Burke told colleagues that establishing the Office quickly was a priority given the rapidly increasing significance of AI adoption.

Mr Byrne previously worked for the Medical Council of Ireland, where he served as Executive Director of Education, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence.

He is a member of the World Health Organization's Expert Working Group on Regulatory Considerations of AI for Health.

Mr Byrne holds a Professional Diploma in Artificial Intelligence from University College Dublin and is the author of the CLEAR Principles for Ethical and Effective AI in Professional Regulation.
