PSNI conducts 'controlled explosion' of device in Derry
· RTE.ieThe Police Service of Northern Ireland has said it conducted a "controlled explosion" of a device in Co Derry.
The security alert happened after a suspected pipe bomb was found on the Foreglen Road in Dungiven.
The PSNI's Ammunition Technical Officers attended the scene and the device was deemed "to be viable".
"The remnants of the item have now been taken away for forensic examination," the PSNI said in a statement.
The road has since re-opened.
North Area Engagement Chief Inspector Mullan thanked the public "for their patience and cooperation as searches in the area were carried out overnight and into this morning".
"Closing roads causes disruption and inconvenience but, ultimately, public safety is our priority," Mr Mullan added.
The PSNI said its enquiries "remain ongoing".
It urged anyone with information which could assist the investigation to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 304 17/07/26.
