Sentencing adjourned for man over incitement to hatred

A 42-year-old man who was convicted of incitement to hatred following an Instagram livestream has had his sentence adjourned after he told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court he wanted a solicitor.

The charge of incitement to hatred against Graham Carey from Dunsink Drive in Finglas related to an Instagram livestream in January 2023.

During the livestream he said refugees were in Ireland to rape women and children, and called on people to gather at Finglas Garda Station.

It followed an allegation by a local woman that she had been sexually assaulted by a refugee which led to days of anti-immigrant protests even after it emerged that the alleged assault involved a local white male.

Carey had represented himself at a trial earlier this year and was convicted by unanimous jury verdict.

A sentence hearing was held yesterday and was adjourned until today for pleas in mitigation.

Today, Carey told Judge Patricia Ryan that he now wanted time to instruct a solicitor.

The judge adjourned the case to next Friday for mention and to set another date for sentence.

She told Carey that because of the current solicitors' dispute there were only two names left on the list of available solicitors, and she could not provide him with a list of solicitors from which to choose.

The judge said the matter may be resolved in time.

Carey gave the judge the name of a Limerick-based solicitor and said he would need time to consult him in person about the case.
