Behind The Story AI Special: The perils and promise of AI

by · RTE.ie

This week Behind The Story is on location at the International AI Summit in Dublin - one of the largest gatherings of the AI sector in Europe this year.

The summit is hosted in Dublin as part of Ireland's presidency of the EU and attracted roughly 1,500 global tech executives, European regulators, and government officials.

Among those addressing the summit were Demis Hassabis, regarded as the architect of AI and one of the most influential figures in AI.

He told delegates that recent hacking incidents perpetrated by AI agents are "early warning shots", and the world could soon face major incidents if systems are not made more secure.

The summit is looking at research and innovation in AI, as well as issues around safeguards and security in the sector.

So what are the big names in AI saying and the opportunities and the dangers? We sit down with tech writer Liz Carolan of The Briefing.ie and Business Post Technology and Innovation Editor Charlie Taylor.

We also get talking to Tom Mackenzie who co-anchors "Opening Trade" on Bloomberg TV and host of Bloomberg Tech Europe. He’s in town to talk to key players at what he says is a critical moment in this area.

"The technology is moving at pace, companies are wrestling with how to adopt this technology and people are wrestling with how to adopt it and governments are trying to work out how to do this is a safe way that benefits people," Tom says.

"That is why you’ve got the leaders and executives from the likes of Microsoft, Antrophic Google Deepmind on the ground."

He says also says there are national security issues and significant macro-economic issues that come about as a result of who has the lead in this technology.
