Almost half of Airbnbs lack this safety device that could save your life

· New York Post

It’s called the silent killer for a reason.

Odorless, tasteless and invisible, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a terrifying threat — and it takes lives every year. According to the CDC, over 400 Americans die annually from unintentional CO poisoning unrelated to fires, and over 100,000 people visit emergency departments due to exposure.

CO poisoning typically occurs when unvented or poorly maintained appliances leak carbon monoxide into closed-off sleeping areas. These incidents can happen anywhere, but vacation rentals and Airbnbs are frequently cited in poisoning cases in the U.S. and abroad.

With summer travel season coming up, more people might be looking into how they can protect themselves, and carbon monoxide detectors are among the simplest and safest investments. These devices use sensors to monitor the air for CO, and if detected, they trigger a high-decibel alarm that is meant to alert the entire household. If you have travel plans, it’s not a bad idea to bring one with you.

While the EPA recommends every home have a CO detector, many short-term rentals and hotels lack basic safety protections. A 2018 study by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that only 56% of vacation rentals had a CO detector installed.

Fortunately, CO detectors are not too expensive. The Kidde carbon monoxide detector is available for around $40 on Amazon. Users say it’s affordable, portable and easy to install anywhere. Some have even claimed that it’s saved their lives.

The Kidde carbon monoxide detector features a digital LED display that shows the level of CO being detected, and a loud, 85-decibel alarm designed to wake you up in the case of CO emergency. Installation is easy — just plug it into a standard 120V outlet in the home.

“I was woken out of my sleep by a loud alarm I had never heard before going off…” one Kidde-owner explained. “I stumbled around my house trying to figure out where it was coming from and that’s when I saw my digital Kiddie CO detector… showing that the CO in the house was at 158 parts per million.”

They explained they had never experienced a CO issue before, but knew that carbon monoxide poisoning can happen quickly. And, they were extremely relieved that their digital Kidde CO detector alerted them before CO levels became lethal.

“I mean no amount is really good but it didn’t wait until the levels were high enough to kill me in five minutes…” they shared. “Had it not been for my Kidde, I would not have woken up that morning.”

The Kidde system continuously senses and updates readings every 15 seconds, and a 9-volt battery backup ensures protection the case of a power outage. It’s UL certified, comes with a 10-year limited manufacturer’s warranty, and meets standard safety requirements.
