Met Office verdict on snow as Arctic blast hits the UK bringing plunging temperatures
by Branwen Jones · Wales OnlineThe Met Office has had its say on whether parts of the UK can expect snowfall in the next coming weeks or not. It has been confirmed that colder weather is on its way as Artic winds are set to spread across the UK.
The Met Office has indicated we're in for a chill with clearer skies after days of gloom. There will also be some frosty nights ahead, especially in north Wales, northern regions, and Scotland on Tuesday night. You can read more about cold it will get as Arctic blast hits here.
And with colder weather perhaps some of us may be considering whether there could be a chance of snow in different parts of the UK. While the air will turn colder, which in its turn may cause precipitation to fall as sleet or snow for some parts of the UK, where and how much will fall will only be known over the coming days. According to the Met Office as the weekend approaches things are set to get even nippier with northerly winds expected to bring an extra chill factor from Saturday, November 16. Snow can be expected to grace the Scottish Highlands from early next week but according to the forecaster the chances of southern snowfall has "very, very low probability".
While the UK long-range weather forecast from Saturday, November 16, until Monday, November 25, predicts it will turn "wintry" the chances of "widespread or disruptive" snowfall in the most populated areas will remain low. The forecaster predicts: "Turning more unsettled and significantly colder as we head into the weekend with low pressure probably becoming established to the east of the UK bringing rain or showers to most regions.
"The heaviest and most frequent spells of rain are most likely in the north where they are likely to turn wintry, especially to the hills of Scotland, but perhaps also to lower levels as colder air digs south. The chance of any widespread or disruptive snowfall affecting more populated areas at this stage however remains low.
"Parts of the south may well see a fair amount of fine and dry weather. Often windy, with a chance of gales at times, especially in the north and east. Temperatures falling below average and feeling particularly cold in the strong winds."
From Tuesday, November 26, until Tuesday, December 10, unsettled weather is likely with weather patterns likely to see Atlantic systems periodically move across the UK. For this period the Met Office says: "Signals vary in prevailing weather patterns through this period but likely more unsettled than during early November.
"There is a greater chance of more mobile weather patterns which would see Atlantic systems periodically move across the country. These bringing some wetter and windier interludes followed by drier periods. Some colder interludes, especially earlier in the period, are possible but overall temperatures more likely to be around or above average."
