Visa has introduced Intelligent Commerce Connect, a groundbreaking platform that empowers artificial intelligence agents to independently browse and purchase products while handling payments on consumers’ behalf.

The payment giant made the announcement this Wednesday, characterizing the platform as an adaptable entry point for AI agent developers and retailers that remains neutral across networks, protocols, and token storage systems.

The infrastructure enables AI-powered agents to explore product listings, make selections, and finalize transactions without requiring human intervention during the payment process.

Retailers participating in the program have their product offerings indexed and made accessible within AI ecosystems. This accessibility allows consumer-facing AI agents to locate and acquire items from these merchants autonomously.

The platform manages critical functions including tokenization, expenditure limitations, identity verification, and PCI security standards compliance. Retailers can participate without significant infrastructure changes, as the entire system operates through a unified connection to the Visa Acceptance Platform.

Intelligent Commerce Connect accepts payments from Visa-branded cards as well as alternative payment cards. The platform maintains compatibility with established AI agent protocols currently deployed in the market.

Managing Autonomous Spending Limits

Consumers can register their Visa payment card and establish parameters governing AI agent spending authority. The AI agent subsequently functions within these predetermined boundaries without additional oversight.

This architecture ensures consumers maintain financial oversight while permitting AI systems to execute purchases independently. Retailers process payments through their current payment processors without implementing additional procedures.

The platform remains in its pilot testing stage with a select group of collaborative partners. Visa has outlined plans for expanded availability during the latter part of 2026.

This initiative represents another step in Visa’s exploration of AI-enabled payment solutions. Earlier this year in March, the financial services corporation introduced Visa CLI, an experimental offering that enabled AI agents to execute same-day payment transfers.

Nevermined Integration and x402 Protocol Implementation

Nevermined, a fintech company specializing in AI applications, has successfully connected with Intelligent Commerce Connect. The integration leverages Coinbase’s x402 protocol framework.

The x402 protocol provides AI agents with a uniform method for initiating payment requests from merchants through programmatic interfaces. Erik Reppel, who developed the x402 protocol, explained that it functions in conjunction with protected card payment infrastructure to facilitate legitimate commercial exchanges between AI agents and retail merchants.

According to data published on the protocol’s official website, x402 has facilitated $24 million in total transaction value during the most recent 30-day measurement period.

Blockchain platforms such as Ethereum, Tron, and Solana have similarly developed infrastructure designed to facilitate AI agent payment capabilities in digital commerce. Visa’s platform introduction positions the company as a competitor to these decentralized alternatives.

The comprehensive launch of Intelligent Commerce Connect remains on schedule for late 2026, with additional partnership reveals anticipated throughout the pilot testing phase.
