Baby Doge, the meme coin project known for its ties to dogecoin, has acquired LimeWire, the once-popular peer-to-peer file-sharing brand. The announcement came this week in a press release from the two companies.
The deal brings together a modern meme coin project and an early internet brand. The companies did not share how much the deal was worth.
Leadership at LimeWire is changing hands as part of the move. Julian and Paul Zehetmayr, the brothers who rebuilt LimeWire starting in 2022, are stepping aside.
Abel Czupor and the Baby Doge team will now run the platform. The Zehetmayr brothers said in a statement that they built LimeWire into a working product used by millions of people.
They said they believe Czupor and Baby Doge are positioned to bring that foundation to a larger audience.
Baby Doge’s Background
Baby Doge launched in 2021 as a token tied to dogecoin. It gained attention that year after Elon Musk posted about the project on social media.
The project says it has built a community of several million people. It also holds a Guinness World Record tied to a large pet food donation for animal shelters.
LimeWire’s History and New Direction
LimeWire was one of the most used file-sharing programs of the early 2000s. It went offline after a lawsuit over copyright issues.
The brand was bought by the Zehetmayr brothers in 2022. They relaunched it with a non-fungible token marketplace and a crypto token called LMWR.
Czupor said the new LimeWire will focus on artificial intelligence tools for content creators. He said creators should be able to keep control of their data and their work.
“If an independent artist decides tomorrow to release an AI-generated album straight to fans, bypassing labels entirely, LimeWire will be a place they can do it directly, on their own terms,” Czupor said.
Under the new plan, LMWR will serve as the token used for services on the platform. That includes decentralized file storage and access to AI tools.
The companies say the goal is to give creators an alternative to platforms run by large tech companies.
Market data shows the news has not lifted prices for either token. BABYDOGE has dropped 9.2% over the past week and is down 42.7% since the start of 2026.
LMWR has performed worse. The token fell 22.2% over the past week and is down 64.3% year-to-date.
BABYDOGE currently has a market cap of about $66.48 million. That places it as the 307th largest crypto asset by market value.
Both meme coins and NFTs have seen less demand compared to prior years. Peer-to-peer file sharing has also declined in popularity since its peak in the early 2000s.
As of this week, neither token has shown a price recovery following the acquisition announcement.
