President Trump has expressed zero concern about artificial intelligence posing an existential threat to mankind. His statements arrived at the same time as multiple insiders from leading AI companies have publicly raised alarming safety warnings.
During a Thursday press briefing, when questioned about whether AI might lead to humanity’s extinction, Trump responded directly: “No, I don’t have any.” The Commander-in-Chief emphasized that his primary focus centers on outpacing China in artificial intelligence development. “I have concerns that if we don’t win AI, we’re going to be put in a very bad position,” he stated to the press. Trump believes America maintains approximately a one-year advantage over China in AI capabilities.
Exodus of Safety Experts Raising Red Flags
Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, made his departure from the organization public on Tuesday. His resignation statement accused both Anthropic and OpenAI of “gambling with our lives,” asserting that those developing these systems acknowledge AI could “kill us all by the end of the decade.”
Additional staff members from both organizations have expressed similar concerns.
A central concern among those focused on AI safety involves recursive self-improvement, commonly abbreviated as RSI. This phenomenon occurs when an artificial intelligence system develops the capacity to enhance its own capabilities autonomously, without human intervention.
On Wednesday evening, Jasmine Wang, who works on alignment research at OpenAI, shared her perspective: “It’s hard to overstate how dangerous speeding towards RSI is.”
Jakub Pachocki, serving as OpenAI’s chief scientist, contributed to these warnings over the weekend. He indicated having a “strong expectation” that artificial intelligence advancement could reach recursive self-improvement levels.
“I am concerned no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence,” Pachocki warned.
Legislative Response Gains Momentum
Lawmakers in Washington are responding with bipartisan initiatives aimed at increasing regulation of cutting-edge AI systems.
This July saw Rep. Jay Obernolte and Rep. Lori Trahan announce their intention to put forward the FRONTIER Act. This proposed legislation would establish guidelines governing the deployment of sophisticated AI models.
Trahan posted on X this Wednesday: “Safety researchers are resigning, powerful AI models are breaking out of their labs, and companies are racing ahead anyway. It’s past time for Congress to get off the sidelines and do its job.”
Earlier in the month, Sen. Bernie Sanders joined forces with Rep. Greg Casar to introduce the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act. This legislation proposes a moratorium on advanced AI development until federal safety regulations are established.
The President has not indicated backing for either legislative proposal. His attention remains fixed on maintaining American dominance over China in the international AI landscape.
The disconnect between the administration’s position and AI safety experts’ concerns continues to widen.
