The Range recently instated a new store policy that has split shopper opinions in two. CDS Superstores announced a change to entry requirements that had some people saying 'is right,' some thought, 'What's the need?'

Dog owners no longer need to leave their pets outside or at home as stores across the UK are now completely dog-friendly. However, the new policy comes with strict requirements. The Range confirmed dogs must always be on a lead while inside a store and welcome "well-behaved dogs only."

Owners are responsible for their dogs' behaviour and must ensure that they are well-behaved, and do not disturb other customers. If dogs make a mess, their owners must clean it up and be mindful of their surroundings.

Dog lovers were thrilled with the change as it meant more time with their furry friends, especially for those with supportive needs. Lee Lonnie said: "Is right, about time more stores need to do this. And for all those who don't like it tough. The majority of dogs are better behaved than the majority of the kids anyway. As I know mine is."

However, not everyone was keen on the idea. Chris Gouldson said: "Is this necessary not everyone is OK with animals some people are afraid and allergic to animals. It's a shop and I don't think it's big enough to accommodate dogs."

Following the social media discourse, I decided to take my dog and test the new policy. I was curious to learn whether staff had been informed of the shift entry requirements and the reaction I'd gain from fellow shoppers.

For reference, I felt pretty anxious beforehand. Taking my dog into a store isn't something I've ever done let alone somewhere like The Range. Regardless, I leashed up my chihuahua, Nando, and took him shopping.

As soon as I entered the store I was met with watchful eyes from both staff members and shoppers. It was immediately uncomfortable. If I was on the other end of the situation and watched someone brazenly wander around a furniture store with a dog I'd do the same.

I toured the aisles and popped into the garden section for a quick browse. After a few minutes, I carried Nando just to switch things up. I made a point of appearing in staff members' line of sight multiple times to see whether it would garner a reaction.

At no point did any of the staff members approach me, ask me to leave, or question why I had my dog there in the first place. I could tell I was being watched but it was never intimidating, more concerning. It felt almost like they were taken back that someone would have a dog at The Range rather than the action itself.

After an uncomfortable 10-minute shopping trip, I left without an issue. There weren't any messy accidents but I came prepared with poo bags in case the worst should happen. Who knows what the response would be if things went differently but I'm glad they didn't.

The Range is happy to welcome dogs into the store but I didn't feel comfortable doing it. Yes, The Range's new policy allows well-behaved dogs to wander the aisle but at what stage does all social etiquette get thrown out of the window?

No doubt people will disagree with but, to me, The Range is no place for a dog. Expect quite a few well-deserved stares if you decide to leash up your dog to grab a few pillows.
