A 161-year-old piece of history has gone up for sale in Mossley Hill. Hoarwithy Lodge on Allerton Road lives up to its lofty title, being a certified Grade II-listed piece of history. Registered with Historic England in 1975, the lodge dates back to 1865, when it was the gatehouse of a much larger Gothic-style mansion called Cleveley.

The mansion was designed by legendary architect George Gilbert Scott, who also designed St Mary's Church in West Derby. It was originally the home of a cotton merchant, Joseph Leather. By 1891 it had become the home of Mathieson and Co partner Thomas Sutton Timmis, whose alkali and glycerine business was one of the most prominent and successful in Widnes at the time.

By 1911, the house was empty and being looked after by a caretaker. It was demolished around 1970, but the lodge and stables remained. Now a residential property, it is now on the market for offers over £750,000.
