A “brave” schoolgirl is helping sick and terminally ill children with a generous act. Caelin Munro, 16, from Skelmeserdale, has cut off her to help make wigs for children with cancer.

Caelin, a Year 11 student at Brooklyns Aurora in Leyland, donated 80cm of her hair to The Little Princess Trust, which uses real hair to make wigs for children and young people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment. Alongside donating her hair, Caelin is also raising money for the trust as well as The Owen McVeigh Foundation, which creates memories for children with cancer and their families.

The big chop took place at Barbers No. 1, on Hackins Hey in Liverpool city centre on Friday (June 26).

Caelin’s dad, Asa Munro, 51, told the ECHO: “Caelin wanted to cut her hair off to help make wigs for little girls with cancer, and then a day later she came in to see us and said, ‘I'm doing this for the girls. But what about the boys?’. So she's doing this for the Little Princess Trust, but she's also raising for the Owen McVey Foundation, making memories for terminally ill kids.

“She wanted to give something back. It's a very selfless act. Caelin has been growing her hair since she was a baby and never had it cut, so she's donating 80cm.

“I think it's very brave and amazing that a 16-year-old girl would think of doing something like that. Girls are usually self-conscious at that age, so this is a very generous and selfless act. I'm probably the proudest dad in the world. It has all been done of her own back, which I find inspiring.

“Caelin is a very caring girl and a lovely-natured girl, but this is the first big thing she's done.”

Asa, a construction worker, said Caelin hopes to make two wigs from her haircut.

He said: “Caelin's hair will go to the Little Princess Trust. It costs £700 to make one wig for a child with cancer. So the hair and £700 will be used to make and deliver the wig to a child. The Owen McVeigh Foundation does days out for terminally ill children. So half will go to each.

“We're going to keep going as much as we can. We're at £2,550 now and still going. The target is £5,000, and hopefully we'll get to that, but if we don't, we'll be more than happy. If we can even get to £2,800 it would make a massive difference.”
