Jason Sudeikis Reveals What He Learned From Olivia Wilde Breakup
· The Fresno BeeJason Sudeikis is looking back at his past relationship with Olivia Wilde.
"It's the old equation of heartbreak, or any variation of it, takes half as long as the process itself … to get over something, so if it were a 10-year relationship, five years would be 2020," Sudeikis, 51, said on the Sunday, October 18, episode of the "Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso" podcast, looking back on what he could have done differently in their romance. "I think it's just flat-out communication. I could have communicated better with how I felt, how things were making me feel [and] how things make me feel."
He continued, "I think, [it's as] if my parents never see my bad grades, we never have to talk about my bad grades even though the grades still exist. If I'm feeling a certain way and I don't talk about it, that doesn't make it go away. It's unfair for someone to be a mind reader, whether that person be a partner or a boss at SNL or a line producer for a television show. It's, like, ‘How do you convey those ideas quicker?'"
Sudeikis and Wilde, 42, were together from 2011 to 2020, during which period they welcomed son Otis, now 12, and daughter Daisy, now 10. After the now-exes went their separate ways, they agreed to share custody of their children.
"I know Olivia loves what she does and is very, very good - and always has been," Sudeikis gushed about TheInvite star, revealing he's become more empathetic after their public split. "I'm thrilled for her, and I feel very fortunate doing what I'm supposed to be doing, but … going through all that has allowed me to see when other folks are going through something similar."
The Ted Lasso star can now sympathize with other individuals navigating similar situations.
"Like, ‘All things must pass,' and when they do, I think the responsible thing - at least what has felt responsible for me - is to just not dwell too much in other people's folly," Sudeikis explained. "It's not easy."
In the years since their breakup, Sudeikis and Wilde have remained committed to coparenting Otis and Daisy.
"I'm a very present mom even when I'm not able to be consistently present. I'm a coparent. I share custody," Wilde said on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast in June. "I am really grateful for the opportunity to have this space when I am completely with my kids, completely engaged with them and they are the focus. … It's an interesting thing, like, once you are sharing custody with someone. It shifts the way you think about parenting. I really value the opportunity to be completely present with them and then to hand them to a very capable coparent, very present with them when he's with them."
