Soldier dies after falling from horse at Royal Windsor Horse Show

A soldier has died after falling from their horse following a display at the Royal Windsor Horse Show on Friday, Thames Valley Police said.

The service person, part of the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, fell at around 19:00 BST after leaving the arena.

They were given immediate medical treatment but sustained serious injuries and died at the scene, the force said. It said it was treating the death as "unexplained but non-suspicious".

The King was "shocked and saddened" to learn about the death, according to a Buckingham Palace spokesperson, and he will be in touch with the family to share his personal condolences.

The spokesperson added: "While His Majesty and other Members of The Royal Family were present at the arena at the time the incident took place, they were not made aware of the severity of the situation until later."

An Army spokesperson said: "It is with deep regret that we announce a member of The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery died on Friday 15 May, following a tragic incident at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

"The family has been notified, and our thoughts are with them at this sad and difficult time."

Thames Valley Police Chief Superintendent Michael Loebenberg said officers "have not found any suspicious circumstances" surrounding the death.

"We are working with the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Accident Investigation Branch and Royal Windsor Horse Show organisers HPower to gather as much information as possible to understand how this happened," he added.

The force said the four-day Royal Windsor Horse Show will continue as planned, with the omission of The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery display.

It also asked for anyone with information relating to get in touch by calling 101, making a report on their website, speaking to a police officer at the horse show or visiting a police station.
