2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 4Matic+ in Malaysia – RM1.9mil, 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, 585 PS, 800 Nm

Always fancied the Mercedes-AMG SL43 but want more shove and all-wheel drive? At its ‘Luxury Like No Other’ event, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has launched the Mercedes-AMG SL63, priced from RM1,898,888, OTR before insurance.

We’ll explore what the extra RM899k over the SL43 gets you, but before that, note that the SL63 is no longer the top of the global SL range – there is an 805 PS/1,420 Nm SL63 E Performance, which is a PHEV! We’re informed that Malaysia could get this bahnstormer soon enough and that it could cost north of RM2 million.

Still, the SL63 is no slouch. A hand-assembled 585 PS/800 Nm 4.0 litre twin-turbo M177 V8 sits under that long bonnet – it’s more potent than the SL43’s four-pot by a whole 204 PS and 320 Nm.

The SL63 does the century sprint in just 3.6 seconds before topping out at 315 km/h, versus the SL43’s 4.9 seconds and 275 km/h. The gearbox is an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G nine-speed auto, and the AMG Performance 4Matic+ system can switch between rear- and all-wheel drive.

Also on are AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active anti-roll stabilisation, active rear-wheel steering, the AMG Night Package, AMG Exterior Carbon Package, Digital Light with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which comprises an electronic AMG locking rear diff, dynamic AMG engine mounts and a Race mode that joins the existing Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual modes.

Slightly different looks to the SL43, too. There are more aggressive front and rear bumpers; the former features D-shaped cutouts on the sides with vertical fins in them, while the latter gets side vents and angular tailpipes (circular on the SL43). The SL63 has the same 21-inch AMG 10-twin-spoke forged alloys as the SL43, but in black instead of silver, and the AMG brake callipers are yellow, not silver.

Other interesting features include flush door handles, a soft top (not seen on an SL since the R129) that opens in 15 seconds and is operable up to 60 km/h, and now that it doesn’t need to have space for a folding hardtop, it has two rear seats (also not on an SL since the R129).

Step inside to AMG Performance nappa leather seats, Manufaktur roof liner in black Microcut microfibre, AMG carbon-fibre trim, an AMG Performance flat-bottomed steering wheel, 11 Burmester speakers, MBUX Interior Assistant, an 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen running the latest MBUX, and Driving Assistance Package. Airscarf as well, of course. The Mercedes-AMG SL63 is covered by a four-year unlimited-mileage warranty.
