2024 Peugeot 408 review in Malaysia – 1.6T, 8AT; three variants; from RM146k; looks great, but is it any good?
by Gerard Lye · Paul Tan's Automotive NewsThe Peugeot 408 was launched in Malaysia back in April this year and is available in three locally-assembled (CKD) variants, starting with the base Allure at RM146,055 on-the-road without insurance. This is followed by the Premium at RM166,055, while the range-topping GT goes for RM196,055.
Nestled within the alluring fastback body is a PureTech 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine making 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) at 5,750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. This is standard for all variants of the 408, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.
In terms of equipment, the 408 gets full LED headlamps and taillights, with the GT set apart by its matrix LED front lights and 3D ‘claw effect’ LED rear lamps. The range-topper also comes with larger 20-inch alloy wheels in Monolithe Black, while lesser variants come with 18-inch units in Granite Grey.
Inside, the seat upholstery for the Allure is vinyl, progressing to full leather for the Premium, while the GT gets premium Nappa leather. All three get a powered driver’s seat, with one in the GT gaining memory and massage functions. Only the Premium and GT are fitted with a powered front passenger seat, with the Allure having manual adjustment instead.
Elsewhere, a 10-inch i-Cockpit digital display is standard across the board, although it is a 3D quartz version for the GT. The i-Cockpit setup also includes a 10-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, which is paired with either six (Allure and Premium) or 10 speakers (GT only), the latter being a Focal-branded sound system.
Safety and driver assistance systems include six airbags, a tyre pressure monitor and the usual array of passive safety systems. Active systems such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are only found on the GT, which also gains a 360-degree camera.
The 408 is certainly a striking car to look at, but is there any substance to match the style? Hafriz Shah attempts to find out in our latest video review, so tune in and share your thoughts on the 408 in the comments below.
