BYD Seal remains best-selling EV in Malaysia, beating Tesla Model 3 – BYD and Tesla dominate top 5

The BYD Seal continues to wear the EV sales crown in Malaysia where January-August 2024 is concerned, according to the latest JPJ registration data. The first eight months of the year have seen 2,267 Seals registered, ahead of the Atto 3‘s 2,217 units and third-placed Tesla Model 3 at 1,978 units.

Trailing closely at 1,851 units is the Tesla Model Y (which was previously in third place ahead of the Model 3 as of January-July), while the BYD Dolphin stays in fifth spot at 1,119 units. The top five is very clearly a BYD-Tesla affair – with 5,603 BYDs to Tesla’s 3,829 units – dominating over the rest in the top 20 list.

Notably, in the month of August, the Tesla Model 3 was the country’s best-selling EV at 379 units, beating BYD’s Atto 3 (227 units), Seal (205 units) and Dolphin (101 units). The Tesla Model Y sold a mere 57 units in August, possibly due to anticipation for the Juniper facelift. Deserving a notable mention is the MINI Countryman SE, which launched in May and appears to be getting into its stride at 87 units in August.

Back to the January-August tally, where Chery’s only EV on sale in Malaysia so far, the Omoda E5, stays in sixth place with 471 units, having shifted 42 units in August. Seventh place brings us to a bit of a disclaimer – you’ll notice the numbers for both the Great Wall Motor Ora Good Cat and 07 are bundled together; ditto the smart #1 and #3 in eighth spot. This is unfortunately so because the data has been inputted under just ‘Ora’ for both GWM models and ‘Brabus’ for both smart models.

This anomaly aside, the March-launched MG4 EV has reached 353 units of sales as of the year’s first eight months, having sold a considerable 62 units in August. The carmaker with the most models in the top 20 is BMW – i5 (293 units), iX2 (253 units), i4 (186 units), i7 (177 units) and iX (169 units).
