We talk a lot in videogames about ownership. It’s that especially fancy kill in Counter-Strike, that perfect character build in Diablo 4, the weird and wacky thing that happened only to you in Fallout. This is what survival games capture so well. Everything is so hard earned and personal – you’ve struggled and strived to make a house, scrounge a meal, or win a battle, and now you can bask in your individual achievements. Combining the RPG world of Kingdom Come Deliverance, the brutal systems of The Forest, and a little of Age of Empires’ resource gathering and building, Medieval Dynasty remains one of the best-loved games of its type on Steam, and now, thanks to a transformative update, it’s even better.

In the opening hours of Medieval Dynasty, you are but a simple farmer, earnestly cultivating a small plot of land and trying to defend it from wild animals. As time wears on, however, it becomes a combination of RPGs and survival games. You need to hunt, fight, and scavenge to survive, but there are also homelier pursuits, like raising a family and forging relationships with your neighbors.

Eventually, your humble farm will prosper into a fully functioning township, and it becomes your responsibility to safeguard the populace from both external threats and the pressures of medieval subsistence. Originally released back in 2021, of the more than 34,000 user reviews posted for Medieval Dynasty on Steam, 90% are positive, and now, thanks to the Autumn Update, there’s much more to enjoy.

Basically every single aspect of Medieval Dynasty has been expanded and improved. There are new armors, weapons, quests, NPCs, encounters, and seasonal events. You can dye clothes in your inventory. You can use battle axes, swords, picks, maces, and daggers now. Seasonal field management has been implemented, and there are new fences, gates, crests, and banners so you can personalize your settlements more closely.

The combat system has been reworked entirely and there are new damage types, blood effects, and durability settings. There are also new bandit camps, divided into three difficulty categories, with the highest and hardest offering the best plunder. The Autumn Update also delivers myriad bug fixes and updates previous challenges and seasonal options. All told, this feels like a totally new version of Medieval Dynasty. If you’re still not convinced, it’s also available now for the historically low price of $22.74 / £17.54. Just head here.

Otherwise, get your sword and shield and wade into some of the best medieval games, or perhaps the best city-building games available today.
