For many Utah parents, school starting also means preparing for the ski and snowboard season. And if you think you can't afford it this year – think again!

Years ago, Ski Utah teamed up with Utah's ski areas to offer the Ski Utah Passport program. This incredible program provides very affordable skiing to 4th, 5th and 6th graders for an annual fee of only $69. The pass will increase in price at 12:01 a.m. Dec. 1, to $89.

Why does Ski Utah offer this program?

Ski Utah's goals include encouraging 4th, 5th and 6th graders to learn and develop great skiing and snowboarding skills at a reasonable price. In addition, they hope families will explore ski areas that they might not have tried before.

How does it work?

After the initial enrollment fee, students who are currently enrolled in 4th, 5th or 6th grade can ski or snowboard for free three days at each of Utah's great ski areas. We'll do the math for you — that's a whopping total of 45 blissful opportunities to ski or snowboard Utah's Greatest Snow on Earth.

Utah ski areas include:

  • Alta Ski Area.
  • Beaver Mountain.
  • Brian Head Resort.
  • Brighton Resort.
  • Cherry Peak Resort.
  • Deer Valley Resort.
  • Eagle Point.
  • Nordic Valley.
  • Park City Mountain.
  • Powder Mountain.
  • Snowbasin Resort.
  • Snowbird.
  • Solitude Mountain Resort
  • Sundance Resort.
  • Woodward Park City.

Blackout dates are applicable to many of the resorts, but six ski areas have chosen to forego any restrictions.

So what's the catch?

Can you believe there isn't a catch? No strings. No deadlines. Parents just need to go to the Ski Utah passport website and enter the student's name, address, age, school, teacher, and pay a $69 registration fee. If this is the second or third time the student has had a pass, there is even a renewal form to simplify the process.

Ski equipment can be affordable

If you are concerned about equipment, there are some creative ways to get ski equipment for your student affordably.

KSL classifieds has equipment listed by many locals selling their new or used equipment. Thrift stores are also great places to explore. And there's always the option to ask extended family or family if they have equipment in your child's size.

Ski swaps are another great option, especially if you have used equipment that your students have outgrown that you can trade.

When buying used equipment, just be sure to have the equipment reviewed by an expert to make sure it is safe to use, tuned up properly and waxed sufficiently.

In addition, many ski and snowboard shops throughout Utah offer season rentals for the season that can be quite affordable. As part of the rental fee they often include free waxing and maintenance throughout the season.

Purchase your student's pass soon

If the ski pass for your student sounds appealing, you'll want to add this to your to do list before the snow falls. The pass will increase in price at 12:01 a.m. Dec. 1, to $89.
