Details emerge on Man United's interest in ambitious £70m Arsenal transfer raid

Manchester United reportedly had a genuine interest in Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly this summer, though he was too expensive.
It seems the Red Devils explored a number of options in midfield in the last few months, with their three new signings in that position ending up as Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba.
Lewis-Skelly was another name Man Utd were alerted to, though things never got particularly advanced, especially when they were informed that his asking price had gone up to £70m, according to the Athletic.
United seemingly still had an interest in the England international quite late on in the window, but that price increase led them to get a deal done for Baleba instead.

The speculation surrounding Lewis-Skelly is a bit of a mystery, with multiple sources telling us that Arsenal were never open to letting him go, and he was never keen to leave.
It makes sense for big clubs like United to look into a situation like this, but it never looked like a concrete possibility, even if some intermediaries led them to believe it could be.
Arsenal fans will be relieved that this saga is over, with Lewis-Skelly now surely set for a key role in Mikel Arteta’s side again this season.
The 19-year-old can play midfield or left-back and has always shone in the Arsenal first-team since rising up from their academy.

While modern Financial Fair Play rules mean there could always be some temptation to cash in on homegrown players due to the opportunity to make pure profit from selling them, it’s hard to see any logic in allowing such a big talent to leave for a major rival.
Lewis-Skelly is not someone Arsenal would want to see go and strengthen United, with the teenager surely set for a key role at the Emirates Stadium for many years to come.
