Doodle for Google contest winner celebrates beauty of textured hair
by Annie Martin · UPIJune 4 (UPI) -- Google has announced the winner of its 17th Doodle for Google contest.
Washington high schooler Kameirah won the competition with her illustration celebrating kinky hair and its culture.
The image depicts three young women of color lying together on the ground as their hair spells out "Google."
"My superpower is my hair and the family history it carries," Kameirah said. "Each texture and style holds culture, care and survival passed down without words."
"Lying in the grass, our crowns rest without weakening," she added. "This kinky hair refuses conformity; it makes us different. Shaped by our lineage, our hair is undeniably beautiful."
Kameirah was one of five finalists who will receive a $10,000 college scholarship. As the winner, she will also receive an additional $45,000 scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for her school.
