July 10 (UPI) -- A Virginia man said what he believed to be a non-winning lottery ticket spent weeks in his truck before he discovered it was actually a $100,000 winner.

The Hanover County man told Virginia Lottery officials he bought the Gold Hard Cash scratch-off ticket and wound up leaving it in his truck for weeks.

The man said he eventually attempted to scan the ticket, which he thought to be a non-winner, for rewards points, but kept getting an error message.

He took the ticket to a local store to use the scanner and was shocked to discover it was a $100,000 winner.

The winner said his prize money will go toward paying bills and making upgrades to his home. He said the rest will go into savings.
